LAS VEGAS — Customers of many traditional internet service providers may be in for a rude awakening if they use their home internet a lot: If they use too much data over the course of a month, they could incur extra charges on their bill or have their internet speeds slowed down.
These unpleasant surprises come as a result of exceeding the limits on how much internet they are permitted to consume under the terms of their contract with their provider — a concept known as “data caps.”
With more people working from home due to the pandemic, encountering data caps — and the extra charges that come with them — has become a more familiar experience.
